All Natural DIY Dishwasher Detergent Powder

One of my oily girlfriends, Arianna Fourt, posted a photo of her homemade dishwasher detergent and she inspired me to whip some up! Easy-peasy and cleans up mac'n'cheesy!

We got our recipe from The Chemical Free Home book by the fabulous Melissa Poepping. It calls for:

1 C. Baking Soda
1 C. Borax
1/4 C. Citric Acid (click affiliate link to order)
25 drops EO of your choice--Melissa uses 15 Young Living Lemon and 10 Young Living Orange ( Scroll to the end of the post for a recipe graphic)

Simple - mix it up in a glass or stainless steel bowl and store it in a glass jar. Use a TBSP per load. How EASY is that?!? I made a double batch and used a 32 oz. Ball mason jar to store it in. I couldn't help myself...used a little extra EO, hee hee. 5 extra drops of Young Living Thieves Oil. :-)

My wash cycle is complete and the smells from the kitchen are AMAZING! (But, I am a sucker for lemon. Hee hee!) I'm impressed with how clean everything is, too. It's all sparkly in there!

YES! I admit it...this is me. 😆 Making the detergent is easier.

It is so easy to get many unnecessary toxins out of our lives, that it really can seem too good to be true. But it's not, cuz guess what? Our ancestors didn't use this crap and they survived! And with less illness! They died from cool stuff, like stampedes. Here's a blurb from another post we did on making eco friendly dishwasher tabs in regards to the ingredient safety:

In doing my research on this, I looked up the ingredients in my current dishwasher detergent. BTW, they are NOT listed on the box. Finding the ingredients required going to the product website, then finding a link in teeny, tiny print on the bottom of the product's page where I could get more information about the ingredients. They do not make it easy for you to be an informed consumer.
This is the list of ingredients in the gelpacs:

Water
Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate
Propylene Glycol      < --- link
Sodium Formate        < --- link
Polyvinyl Alcohol          < --- link
Subtilisin

So the link for subtilisin expired and I searched for a new link. Can I just tell you I want to run away from all humanity right now? This is scary. This is a protein for sale on the internet that has many different uses and can possibly do weird things. If you read them you may wonder why the sale isn't more closely regulated. Then there was this: "Almost every property of subtilisin, a simple bacterial serine protease, has been altered by protein engineering including its catalysis, substrate specificity, pH/rate profile, and stability to oxidative, thermal and alkaline inactivation."
Which bothers me because A, the amounts we ingest may seem insignificant, but they can accumulate in our bodies I read, AND B, we are just beginning to understand that some disease comes on by way of 'DNA exchange'. Genetically modified foods pass their qualities into our DNA and our coding can get garbled, so when our body repairs itself, it rebuilds whacky shizz! Interesting concept, right? It's a new one for me, but science backs it up and I encourage you to look up the connection between GMO's, gut bacteria, and human DNA.

Sulfonated Polymer

Aqueous Solution of Acrylic Polymers
Amylase Enzyme
Xanthan Gum
Fragrance / Parfum
Citric Acid
Sodium Hydroxide
D&C Orange 4 (Bleh)

I'm sorry to go off on such a tangent there, but WHY on Earth are we doing this?

What I made for pennies per use works great, and is saving my family from toxic chemicals. Why do we still have toxic crap again?! Oh yeah...because we're still buying it. (And a PSA for you, 'fragrance' is code for an unregulated toxic concoction to AVOID, 'parfum' is even more potent, and to me it's the scariest thing on the list!) OK, I'm gathering myself now...

**sniffing Gathering** ....exhale and smile

Whether mixing a simple dish powder is on your to do list, or if you'd like to make the tablets you should be OK finding Borax and Baking Soda at your local store, but citric acid is a little more tricky. You can click on the picture below to order a well-priced high-quality product from Amazon (or click to visit our A-store) The products used are on the page, "NATURAL CLEANING".
