Part 2--Tangerine & Lime Creamsicle DIY organic -TINTED- Lip Balm :-)

Earlier last week I shared a really yummy lip balm recipe--Tangerine & Lime Creamsicle.

Then I got to feeling a lil bit experiment-y. I wanted to try a tinted lip balm.

Using this standby recipe I love and created through trial and error (cuz I loves me some equal parts!!) I trialed and errored again! (Thank you to TLC One Drop At A Time for the graphic!) There were 2 drops Stress Away, 1 Lime and 1 Tangerine essential oil added. Young Living, of course!

My first attempt was good, but there wasn't enough color. I experimented with this ground organic hibiscus powder and thought a 1/2 tsp. per batch was enough...but not quite! Here's what that looks like in a liquid and a solid balm:

It looks colorful in the tube, and I liked the tiny touch of color, but it didn't make a noticeable difference like I was expecting. This is great for children or women who like a very subtle enhancement.

My next attempt was much better for what I was expecting. I added 2 tsp of the powdered hibiscus plus 1 tsp of organic cocoa powder to the full batch. It looked really dark, but it barely puts a tint on my lips. It's nice-- just enough! (scroll down to see this photo close up) There is a tiny bit of graniness to this...but it wasn't bad. I've heard much worse. LOL. Totally doable. (And I do!)

If could do it again, I would have made different colors individually in little bowls  There are SO many ways to play with colors, so I recommend making tiny test batches and finding out what YOU like.

Another idea is putting your balm in lip gloss pots. Perfect if what you have left is too small for a tube! (PS, only use plastic pots if you want to ingest poison--not even kidding)
These are plastic pots I was blending oils in.

๐Ÿ˜ณCan you guess which one developed a large white blob in the middle and 'dried' looking 'scarred' and which one did not have essential oil? ๐Ÿ˜‚ So, yeah. Go with glass.

You can use any flavor you want in your tinted balm. For other lip balm EO combinations check out these recipes from a previous blog post. Follow the other links to even more recipes. Most important, check out the reasons we avoid buying premade balms from anyone other than YL and you'll understand why making our own lip balm is a no brainer. Please do that. Educate yourself and share with people you love.

Making your own lip balm is SO easy it's almost ridiculous! Here are links to Amazon for what you need to DIY great lip balm, (don't forget the pippettes on page 5!) and of course for Young Living essential oils, start here. They should be the ONLY brand you will choose to consume. (and we do consume what we put on our lips)

My daughter and I used the mini scotch tapes from the Tapefitti caddy to decorate these tubes. SO unique! You may click right on the picture below to order a caddy with 30 rolls of this cute tape (9 feet long each!) or visit our post on Poo-pouri, which has tons of easy decorating ideas for your DIY's .

Question about lip balm. Can I replace one of these oils with carrot seed oil to add the SPF to the lip balm? Thanks

Hi Debbie. Great question. You can add any oils you want to a balm, but there are no essential oils that offer you true protection from the sun. We don't want you to be under that illusion, so, no. :-/
